  • Large skillet or wok
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Small bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan) trimmed, tough stems removed
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or any neutral oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Instructions

  • Wash and trim the Chinese broccoli, discarding any tough stems. Cut into 3-4 inch pieces.
  • Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil.
  • Add minced garlic to the skillet and stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Add the Chinese broccoli to the skillet. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the broccoli is bright green and slightly tender.
  • In a small bowl, mix oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, water, and sesame oil. Stir to combine.
  • Pour the sauce mixture over the Chinese broccoli. Stir well to coat evenly.
  • Continue stir-frying for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and the broccoli is tender-crisp.
  • Remove from heat and serve immediately as a side dish or over steamed rice.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, replace oyster sauce with vegetarian mushroom sauce. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
