Equipment

  • 9-inch tart pan
  • Rolling Pin
  • Mixing bowl
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp cold water if needed
  • 4 large apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for caramel
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter softened, for caramel
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • To make the crust, combine flour and sugar in a mixing bowl. Add cubed butter and rub into the flour mixture until it forms a crumbly texture.
  • Add water gradually and mix until the dough comes together. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to fit the tart pan. Place it into the pan and press to fit. Trim any excess dough.
  • In a saucepan over medium-low heat, melt 1/2 cup sugar until it turns a light amber color. Stir in 2 tablespoons of butter and sea salt until fully combined to make the caramel.
  • Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, then arrange them in the prepared tart shell.
  • Pour the warm caramel over the apple slices and evenly spread it with a pastry brush.
  • Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
  • Cool the tart slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For added flavor, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Alternatively, for a nutty crunch, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the apples before baking.
